This trip begins in the countryside of Wyoming County and ends on the shores of Lake Ontario in Orleans County. Start the adventure in Arcade by booking an excursion on the historic Arcade & Attica Railroad. Step back in time aboard one of the few remaining operating excursion trains in New York State. Offered Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays, riders enjoy a 90-minute ride through history and local landscape. Keep an eye out for their special events, like the Murder Mystery Dinner excursions. If hungry for breakfast or lunch, locals suggest the Arcade Village Café in the village. Traveling north out of Arcade, enjoy expansive views of the bucolic landscape and farm lands.
When approaching the Village of Varysburg, pay a visit to Hidden Valley Animal Adventure. The park provides guests with up-close and interactive experiences with over 350 animals from 40 different species. It is fun for all ages.
Continuing northward, road trippers will pass Merle Maple Farm. For over a century and six generations, the Merle family has produced maple products, eggs and dairy. Visiting their shop is a mouth-watering adventure in itself. Further down the road in Attica, The Vintage Cow Farmers Market features a store that sells locally-source food, as well as an ice cream stand.
Next on the trip is a relaxing, meandering ride through the countryside up to Batavia. A whole slew of opportunities greet travelers in Batavia just off Rt. 98. Craft brews and delicious pub faire await at Eli Fish Brewing Co. A casino, hotel, harness horse racing and live entertainment are the name of the game at Batavia Downs Gaming. When pulling out of Batavia, Harley-Davidson and motorcycle enthusiasts love making a stop at Stan’s Harley Davidson. Stan’s has an 11,000 sq. foot show room that is filled with everything from bikes to t-shirts.
Heading over to the Village of Albion, antique and unique gift lovers will find joy in exploring The Downtown Browsery Co-Op. The store features vintage, Victorian, furniture, steampunk, handmade candles and so much more. Each visit to this store is completely unique. On the way out of town, drivers will arrived at a one-lane bridge that crosses the Erie Canal. Off to the right, is Canalside Park. It’s a delightful spot to watch boats float by, view the operation of the lift bridge and experience an array of bird species that occupy the historic waterway.
Journeying out of Albion, it’s only nine flat miles through open fields to the end of Route 98 in Point Breeze. Cap the journey off by visiting the Oak Orchard Lighthouse Museum on the shores of Lake Ontario. Open on weekends in the warmer months, the replica 34 ft. tall lighthouse is available for guests to explore. Once inside, climb the ladder that goes up to the top and soak in the views of the lake. The Village of Point Breeze is a world-class fresh water fishing location. Anglers flock to the town for Lake Ontario excursions and fishing on the Oak Orchard River. There are plenty of campgrounds and restaurants nearby for visitors looking for a longer stay.
