Lakeville, NY to Varysburg, NY - 40 miles
This road trip will take you from east to west along Route 20A, from the lakeside to countryside. You’ll be sure to find your share of sweet treats and exciting adventures along the way, from mansions and museums to roaring waterfalls and homemade ice cream.
Start the trek at Vitale Park on the north end of Consensus Lake in Lakeville, NY. Soak in the lakeside view of New York State’s westernmost Finger Lake. The beautiful park is home to some great walking trails, fishing opportunities and alluring garden areas. While in Lakeville, families love Minnehan’s Fun Center’s three go-cart tracks and Fun Center. At nearby Deer Run Winery adults can enjoy year-round wine sampling and locally-sourced charcuterie plates. The winery’s red and white wines have won awards at 46 different national and international wine festivals.
The next town along this route is Geneseo, NY. When driving through this quaint village, it is impossible to miss the stately Wadsworth Homestead situated on Rt. 20A. The magnificent country manor estate overlooks the Genesee Valley and has been continuously owned by the original family since 1804. While primarily being used as an event venue, The Wadsworth Homestead offers fascinating historic tours of the house on select days.
A generous selection of local restaurants and shops can be found off Rt. 20A on Main Street. At the cozy Sweet Arts Bakery, customers say that the homemade chocolate chip cookies and cinnamon rolls are simply the best around.
The National Wartime Museum in Geneseo is an extraordinary place to visit. The museum is dedicated to the preservation of World War II, Korean War and Vietnam era aircraft, equipment and history. The museum features an impressive vintage aircraft collection located inside and outside the museum. With a little pre-planning, there are opportunities to actually ride in some of the historic airplanes.
From Geneseo, the trek westward takes drivers across the Genesee Valley to the Village of Leicester. Of course, when driving through the area, it’s perfectly acceptable to stray three miles south of Rt. 20A to visit the Grand Canyon of the East, Letchworth State Park. The incredible views of the 600 ft. deep gorge, hiking trails, three roaring waterfalls, museum and The Autism Nature Trail are just some of the reasons why the park was named USA Today’s “Best State Park” in 2015.
Continue to travel West along Rt. 20A over the hilly agricultural landscape into the Village of Warsaw, NY. Upon arrival, go experience the 80 ft. tall Warsaw Waterfalls in the heart of the village. Seek out the Warsaw Village Park and follow the creek bed up stream to view the beautiful falls. After a hike, visit Yummies ice cream shop for scrumptious artisan ice cream, sundaes, milkshakes, banana splits and more.
The final destination on this East to West journey is a stop at the beautiful Byrncliff Golf Resort & Banquets. Byrncliff is a very special place, featuring a public golf course that has a national reputation for challenging new and experienced golfers. The resort also offers wonderful lodging, all-day restaurant service, a swimming pool and a miniature golf course. Whether staying for an hour or staying overnight – Byrncliff will not disappoint. It is a great place to end a road trip.
