Why is there a Jell-O Museum in LeRoy? Because in 1897, Pearle Wait, a carpenter from LeRoy, registered the Jell-O trademark for a gelatin dessert. It was not the first flavored gelatin, but it soon became America’s Most Famous Dessert through aggressive advertising and promotion. Norman Rockwell, Maxfield Parrish, and Rose O’Neill were just some of the artists who created clever illustrations promoting Jell-O. But P.B. Wait did not become a millionaire. In 1899, he sold the rights to the trademark to a LeRoy businessman, Orator Woodward for $450. Discover the rest of the story at the Jell-O Museum. And while visiting the Museum, which is owned by the LeRoy Historical Society, you can also explore some of the other LeRoy oddities- Why was Henry Ford arrested in LeRoy? Why is there a Statue of Liberty on the creek? Where are the 100 barn quilts? Where is the 100-ton steam shovel that is on the National Register of Historic Places? And who is Jacob LeRoy and why isn’t the town named for him?
