Hooked on Fall: Your Guide to Stream Fishing in Orleans County
Autumn in Orleans County is a sight to behold, with vibrant reds and oranges painting the landscape and the apple orchards ready for harvest. This picturesque setting also marks the beginning of an exciting fishing season.
Species to Fish in Fall:
- Salmon
- Brown Trout
- Steelhead
- Bass
- Pike
The mighty Chinook salmon, driven by its spawning instinct, surges up the tributaries from the depths of Lake Ontario in remarkable numbers. Despite rumors that spawning salmon won’t take a lure or fly, these powerful fish strike out at any presentation that threatens their spawning process. Joining them are the giant Brown Trout, making the Oak Orchard area a must-visit destination for anglers nationwide.
As the Brown and Salmon runs taper off towards the end of November, sleek and feisty Steelhead begin their runs up the tributaries, continuing until May. This creates a year-round opportunity for world-class trout, salmon, and pan fishing.
More Water - More Fish!
Starting in 2020, the NYS Canal Corporation began releasing more water from the Erie Canal into Lake Ontario tributaries over an extended period of time, creating a longer season and optimal fishing opportunities. This includes the Oak Orchard Creek and Sandy Creek in October and Johnson, Oak Orchard, Sandy and Salmon Creeks in November and early December.
Prime Fishing Spots:
Oak Orchard River and Nearby Tributaries: The Oak Orchard River, along with nearby tributaries like Johnson Creek and Sandy Creek, offers prime fishing opportunities during the fall, winter, and spring migrations of trout and salmon. The cool, deep lake waters and quick-flowing tributaries are home to trophy-sized fish gorging themselves on bait fish and eggs, making them strong fighters ready for your lure, spoon, fly, or bait. This 15.8-acre area in Carlton, bounded by the Oak Orchard River, provides excellent access for fishing and boating.
From October 11 to November 11, 2024, St. Mary’s Archery Club a private sportsman club on the Oak Orchard River in Waterport, NY, opens it’s gate to the public, allowing anglers to fish and enjoy the use of their facility. (Parking fees are collected.) Check back for updates on other amenities they will offer.
Inland Waters and Lakes: The fish-rich waters of Orleans County, including Lake Alice (Waterport Pond), Glenwood Lake, and miles of the Erie Canal, offer top-notch fishing action year-round. These areas are perfect for catching warm-water species such as bass, pike, and panfish in the spring, summer, and fall. Bullhead, walleye, perch, and northern pike are also abundant.

Learn to Fish our Streams!
This past Spring (and with intentions to repeat in 2025), Orleans County teamed up with New York Sea Grant, along with representatives from the US Fish & Wildlife Service Lower Great Lakes Fish and Wildlife Conservation office to host a Women's Learn to Fish Seminar at the St. Mary's Archery Club. Ron Bierstine, Orleans County Sportfishing Coordinator, provided classroom and hands-on learning for women who attended the seminar. Stream fishing basics, safety, and fish biology were covered. The women also practiced fly fishing and spin fishing techniques in the Oak Orchard River.
